Ceramic Dental Implants

Dental implants are one of the most reliable ways to replace missing teeth today. At Shank Dental Care, we offer ceramic, a biocompatible, metal-free alternative to titanium implants.

The Science Behind Ceramic Implants

Ceramic implants are made of a strong, tooth-colored material that integrates naturally with bone and resists corrosion. Titanium can sometimes trigger immune responses or inflammation; however, zirconia is well-tolerated by the body.

As part of his integrative approach, Dr. Taylor Shank recommends ceramic implants to support your body's natural healing and reduce your risk of adverse reactions. If you have metal sensitivities, autoimmune concerns, or prefer to avoid having any metal in your body, ceramic implants are as reliable as titanium.

Why Patients Choose Ceramic Implants

We use ceramic dental implants at Shank Dental Care because they offer many benefits to our patients.
Metal-Free and Body Friendly
Zirconia is a non-metallic ceramic that reduces the risk of allergic reactions, inflammation, or other concerns that many people have about metal restorations.
Natural Appearance and Healthy Gums
Unlike titanium, which can appear as a gray shadow if gums recede, the tooth-colored material blends naturally with your smile and supports healthy gum tissue.
Supports Whole-Body Health
Ceramic implants are a durable solution that eliminates worries for those with autoimmune conditions, metal sensitivities, or concerns about long-term metal exposure.

The Ceramic Implant Process

Ceramic implants consist of three parts: the implant post, which replaces the missing tooth root, and the abutment, which connects the final crown, bridge, or denture to the implant in your jawbone. The key difference is the material and how well your body accepts it.

Initial Evaluation

Dr. Shank begins with a thorough assessment, including 3-D imaging (CBCT) to evaluate your bone quality and plan proper implant placement. He will discuss your health history, reasons for choosing ceramic, and whether you're a good candidate for this option.

Our Integrative Approach

Throughout the process, we use techniques meant to support your body's healing:

  • Ozone therapy during placement to reduce bacteria and promote healing
  • Biocompatibility testing to ensure replacement materials work well with your system
  • Gentle surgical techniques that preserve healthy tissue

Implant Healing and Final Restoration

Over the next 3–6 months, the implant fuses with your jawbone, creating a stable base for the restoration. Once this process is complete, Dr. Shank will use CEREC same-day technology to custom-craft your final replacement the same day. He will ensure the restoration matches the surrounding teeth and functions comfortably for decades, with proper care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ceramic (zirconia) and titanium implants are both proven, durable options for tooth replacement. The choice often comes down to specific health needs, aesthetic priorities, and material preferences.

  • Material Composition — Titanium implants are made from metal and have been the standard in implant dentistry for decades, with extensive research supporting their long-term success. Ceramic implants are made from zirconia, a non-metallic material that has gained significant clinical validation over the past 15–20 years.
  • Biocompatibility — While titanium is biocompatible for most patients, some people with metal sensitivities, autoimmune conditions, or concerns about metal exposure prefer ceramic implants. Zirconia is highly biocompatible and eliminates concerns about metal in the body, making it an excellent choice for patients seeking metal-free dentistry.
  • Aesthetics — Ceramic implants offer a distinct advantage for front teeth or patients with thin gum tissue. Their white color won't show through as a gray shadow if gums recede over time, whereas titanium can create a grayish appearance at the gum line.
  • Strength and Longevity — Both materials are strong enough for long-term tooth replacement. Modern zirconia implants are comparable to titanium when placed in patients with adequate bone density and proper bite function.
